Entry/Exit-System (EES)

What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The Entry/Exit System digitally records non-EU citizens at the external borders of the Schengen area. Biometric data such as fingerprints, facial images, and other travel information are recorded, gradually replacing the current system of passport stamping.

Which groups of people are affected by the new EES process?

  • Groups of people with short-stay visas (C visas)
  • Visa-exempt third-country nationals

Details on which groups of people are exempt from the EES can be found on the official website of the EU and on the website of the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior.

What will change?

At border control points, the biometric data of the affected groups of people will be collected and compared, and their residence status will be checked digitally. For EU citizens, the border control process will remain unchanged.

Recommendations

  • EES-required persons aged 12 and over: Use the self-service systems for pre-registration, if available. These facilitate the process by offering a wide range of languages.
  • EU citizens aged 14 and over: Use the automated passport control, if available.

Detailed information on the Entry/Exit System can be found on the official website of the EU and the Austrian Federal Minsitry of the Interior.

Flughafen Wien AG, together with the Schwechat Municipal Police Headquarters and the Federal Ministry of the Interior, is committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of the Entry/Exit System. We apologize for any delays that may occur at border control points.
