3.8% rise in the number of local passengers – Passenger growth to Western Europe, North America, Middle and Far East
In March 2016, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport increased by 1.9% in a year-on-year comparison to a total of 1,710,929. Local passenger volume was also up in the same period, rising by 3.8%. This was in contrast to a 3.1% decline in the number of transfer passengers from the comparable level in March 2015. The number of flight movements decreased by 2.8%, whereas the maximum take off weight showed a positive development, increasing by 2.0% from the prior-year level. Air cargo in March 2016 was down slightly by 0.8% from the previous year
The number of passengers flying to Western Europe rose by 2.0% in March 2016, whereas passenger volume to Eastern Europe fell by 7.4%. The Middle East region showed a rise of 4.1% in March 2016, in contrast to the 3.4% drop in the number of passengers flying to the Far East. Passenger volume to North American destinations was up 18.4% in March 2016, whereas the number of passengers to Africa fell 17.1% from the prior-year level.
The strategic foreign investments of the Flughafen Wien Group developed well. The number of passengers handled by Kosice Airport rose 30.6% in the period January to March 2016 to a total of 70,937 passengers. Malta Airport reported 15.5% growth in passenger volume in the first quarter of 2016 to 800,707 passengers.
