6.1% increase in the number of local passengers – Passenger growth to Western Europe and North America
In February 2016, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport increased by 3.9% in a year-on-year comparison to a total of 1,348,801. Local passenger volume was also up in the same period, rising by 6.1%. Transfer passenger volume fell by 3.1% from February 2015. The number of flight movements rose by 1.5%, whereas the maximum take off weight also showed a positive development, increasing by 6.3%. In February 2016 air cargo climbed 1.3% from the prior-year level. Accumulated passenger volume in the period January to February 2016 was up 2.5% from the first two months of 2015.
The number of passengers flying to Western Europe rose by 5.6% in February 2016, whereas passenger volume to Eastern Europe fell by 1.4%. The Middle East region reported a slight rise of 0.2% in passenger volume in February 2016 in contrast to the 2.9% decline in the number of people flying to the Far East. Passenger volume to North American destinations was up 25.2% in February 2016, whereas the number of passengers to Africa was down by 20.1% from the prior-year level.
The strategic foreign investments of the Flughafen Wien Group developed well. The number of passengers handled by Kosice Airport from January to February 2016 rose by 35.4% to a total of 45,561 passengers. Malta Airport registered 13.3% growth in passenger volume year-on-year to 473,183 passengers
