Vienna Airport Honoured as a “Family-Friendly Company” by the Austrian Federal Chancellery

One month of parental leave for fathers, various working time models, company kindergarten, five additional days of vacation per year and a lot more: Vienna Airport implements numerous measures to ensure the compatibility of family and career. This commitment pays off. Now Vienna Airport has been honoured as a “family-friendly company”. The certificate was handed over by Juliane Bogner-Strauß, Federal Minister for Women, Families and Youth, to Günther Ofner, Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.

“Family friendliness is not only a question of social commitment. In the meantime, implementing family-oriented measures is a decisive competitive advantage. There are many possibilities for companies to support employees in ensuring the compatibility of work and family life. Thanks to its comprehensive package of measures. Vienna Airport is setting a good example for this”, says Juliane Bogner-Strauß, Federal Minister for Women, Families and Youth.

“More than 6,000 people work for Flughafen Wien AG, and the diversity of job descriptions lead to different demands on employment models. Our objective is to more effectively organise the compatibility of family and career on behalf of all employees of the company. We have already introduced one month of paternity leave, five additional vacation days per year and many other measures. The entire airport site even profits from several of them. The company kindergarten and the health centre can be used by all 22,500 employees of the 250 firms based at the airport. Vienna Airport is a job creator for the entire region, and we assume this responsibility”, states Günther Ofner, Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.

Detailed assessment by external auditors
Within the context of the Career and Family (“berufundfamilie“) audit by Familie & Beruf Management GmbH, Flughafen Wien AG voluntarily submitted to an evaluation of its implemented measures to improve the compatibility of work and family life. The audit is carried out with external support and repeated every three years. Following the initial certification in the year 2015, Flughafen Wien AG was now once again honoured as a “family-friendly company”.

Measures implemented by Vienna Airport: from part-time work to one month of paternity leave
Flughafen Wien AG has carried out numerous measures in 22 areas to improve the compatibility of family and career. Employees at the airport can take advantage of one month of paternity leave (leave for 28 consecutive calendar days while receiving 50% of the monthly salary or wages), the opportunity to take sabbaticals, different part-time and homeworking models, events to support people on parental leave, a personal coaching and consulting programme for employees to deal with private and professional issues as well as a comprehensive, occupational health management including seminars and medical services provided by the health centre set up on the airport premises. Moreover, since 2019 all Flughafen Wien AG employees benefit from five additional vacation days per year.

New company kindergarten at the airport
The company’s own kindergarten also covering off-peak hours is particularly important. It is available to all employees at the airport hub and is already being extensively used today. The kindergarten will be expanded when it relocates to the new Office Park 4 in May 2020. Then the infants will have about 1,200 m² of indoor space at their disposal as well as the same amount of outdoor area on the ground floor. The rooms in the new building are bright and flooded with light and will offer room for up to 135 children in the future. The kindergarten will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. without interruption throughout the year.

One can already address inquiries or register in advance for the new kindergarten by e-mail at luftikus@monpti.at or by calling +43 (1) 80 20 980.
