First Time in Austria: Austrian Sustainable Building Council Issues Platinum Certificate to Vienna Airport for Office Park
4
On November 15, 2017, Flughafen Wien AG was honoured with a platinum rating by the Austrian Sustainable Building Council (ÖGNI) for its real estate project “Office Park 4”. The platinum pre-certificate was given to Günther Ofner, Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG, within the context of an ÖGNI event held in the General Aviation Center at Vienna Airport. The organisation recognised the fact that sustainability and energy efficiency has already played a key role in planning the state-of-the-art office complex and that Office Park 4 will be one of the most energy-efficient buildings at the airport hub in the future thanks to its innovative construction. The new Office Park 4 will be put into operation in the year 2020.
“Sustainability and energy efficiency are fundamental aspects of our corporate strategy. We already prioritise the aspects of energy efficiency and sustainability in our building planning work, especially when it comes to new construction projects. The objective is to become one of Europe’s most environmentally-friendly airports. The platinum pre-certificate for the future Office Park 4 confirms that we are on the right path”, says Günther Ofner, Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG.
“As an important member of ÖGNI, Vienna Airport has always taken sustainability principles into account in the development of the airport site. The certificate issued by ÖGNI in line with the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) standard is continuously emerging as the pre-eminent European quality certificate. It is particularly gratifying to see the airport already implementing the latest findings in its planning, for example by paying attention to the microclimate”, states Andreas Köttl, President of ÖGNI.
Office Park 4 honoured with platinum rating
The “Office Park 4” project was granted the platinum rating by the Austrian Sustainable Building Council (Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Nachhaltige Immobilienwirtschaft -ÖGNI) for prioritising ecological and sustainable considerations. This pre-certificate assesses ecological aspects, including functionality, in the planning phase, for example the façade surface which is 60% transparent, enabling rooms to be suffused with plenty of daylight and simultaneously taking account of wind comfort thanks to its special shape. The wind-sheltered recreational area will be greened, equipped with benches and offer employees a relaxed atmosphere for their breaks. Moreover, the project team also took ecological principles into account with respect to building services and the choice of materials in order to guarantee a minimisation of energy consumption. The focus is also on the use of regenerative energy sources. The renowned architect Heinz Neumann with his partners Oliver Oszwald and Florian Rode of the architectural office HNP architects ZT GmbH also played a major role in the sustainable and innovative approach to planning. Office Park 4 is the very first construction project throughout the country to be pre-certified with the new system type “New Construction of an Office and Administrative Building Version 2017”.
Sustainability certificate for Airport City Vienna
In 2014, Vienna Airport became the first commercial area in Austria to be issued the DGNB Sustainability Certificate. Various site-specific aspects were analysed and evaluated such as air conditioning, technical building services, measures to reduce energy consumption, lounges and working spaces for the employees at the site and transport connections in order to be able to prepare a holistic assessment. This “quality certificate” ensures site development in accordance with objectively sustainable criteria.
Airport City Vienna: Optimal business location partner for companies
The development of the airport real estate site into a multifunctional Airport City is a central element of the airport’s strategy. The airport offers ideal conditions for locating business operations thanks to a commercial covering about 40.000 m², more than 100,000 m² of office and conference space, various shopping and service facilities such as supermarkets, a pharmacy, a gym, a 24/7 postal partner, and numerous other services along with optimal transport and traffic connections.
