Noise management

Aircraft movements

Within the framework of the Vienna Airport meditation procedure, agreement was also reached between Austro Control and representatives of the population affected by aircraft noise on the issue of traffic distribution during landings and take-offs. For safety reasons, take-offs and landings must be made against the wind. The ground wind at the airport therefore determines the use of the runway and thus influences the distribution of flights among the four possible take-off and landing directions. This is not only about the distribution of arrivals and departures in the existing runway system. It is also about the area over which the arrivals and departures will be carried out. The mediation contract defines target values for the distribution of traffic. Within the framework of the evaluation, it will be continuously monitored how well these target values have been achieved.

Flight tracks

For more than two decades, a flight track and noise monitoring system has been in operation at Vienna International Airport: FANOMOS (Flight Track and Noise Monitoring System). This system analyses arrivals and departures - not as live images, but as recorded flight tracks in retrospect. Compliance with the prescribed approach and departure routes is monitored and deviations, i.e. departures from the prescribed corridors, become visible.

Austro Control and Vienna International Airport offer the possibility to query flight tracks on the Internet themselves in order to provide a transparent display. Based on radar data, information on the course of take-offs and landings from and to Vienna Airport is made available. The period of observation can be freely selected. The number of aircraft movements, flight altitudes and the use of runways in different wind situations can be tracked. The data presented comply with both the Austrian data protection regulations, which are very strict by international standards, and the safety requirements of aviation.

Aircraft noise

However, FANOMOS not only records the flight tracks 365 days a year, but also continuously registers the sound levels of the overflights with the 15 fixed measuring points in settlement areas in the vicinity of the airport. Austro Control provides the radar and flight information data required for the recording. FANOMOS combines the flight data with the events recorded at the measuring points. Wind strength, take-off weight and aircraft type influence the route actually flown. The data are meticulously analysed and summarised in a measurement report published on www.flugspuren.at.
