What are the differences between PCR tests and rapid antigen tests

PCR test:

The PCR test is used to detect a current COVID-19 virus infection.

The tests are evaluated in a laboratory.

In the PCR test procedure, the genetic information of the virus (i.e. its genetic material) is duplicated and detected.

The PCR test is more precise (higher sensitivity) than the antigen test, but the evaluation takes longer and it is more expensive.

Rapid antigen test:

The rapid antigen test  (Joinstar Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd, COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test (Colloidal Gold); Specificity: 99,2; Sensitivity: 97,1%is used to detect a current COVID-19 virus infection.

The evaluation of the tests takes place on site at the airport, a laboratory evaluation is not necessary for this.

With the antigen rapid test, the proteins or protein envelopes of the virus (viral antigens) are detected.

The antigen test is - especially with a low viral load - less precise than the PCR test, but the evaluation only takes a few minutes and the test procedure is cheaper.

Thank you for your understanding.

PCR Test:

A positive result is counted as a confirmed COVID-19 case. A positive PCR test result is automatically reported to the epidemiological reporting system (EMS). The person who tested positive must immediately go into self-quarantine and the responsible health authority initiates further steps (including contact tracing).

Rapid antigen test:

A positive antigen test result is classified as a suspected case and is automatically reported to the responsible health authority. The person who tested positive must immediately go into self-quarantine and wait for further instructions from the health authority. Positive antigen test results are usually confirmed using a PCR test.

PCR Test:

A negative PCR test can have different legal consequences. This can range from facilitating travel to avoiding quarantine regulations. However, since the specific fields of application are very different or the legal framework conditions are constantly changing, it is recommended to obtain information about the latest status from the responsible authorities.

Rapid antigen test:

A negative rapid antigen test can trigger different legal consequences. This can range from facilitating travel to avoiding quarantine regulations. However, since the specific fields of application are very different or the legal framework conditions are constantly changing, it is recommended that you contact the responsible authorities for the latest information.

This information is without guarantee - detailed information on the different COVID-19 test procedures can be found on the website of the Ministry of Health.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Tests are only carried out on people without COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, etc.) or without contact with a person who may have COVID-19. People who have symptoms themselves or who have had contact with someone who may be ill should stay at home and contact the health hotline at 1450 (only applies to the Austrian telephone network).

  • A person who tested positive with a PCR test is classified as a confirmed corona case and is automatically reported by the laboratory to the responsible health authority. The person who tested positive must immediately go into self-quarantine and wait for further instructions from the health authorities.

  • A person who tests positive with a rapid antigen test is classified as a suspected case and is automatically reported by the medical center to the responsible health authority. The person who tested positive must immediately go into self-quarantine and wait for further instructions from the health authorities. Positive antigen test results are usually confirmed by means of a PCR test - after contacting the health authorities, the person who tested positive calls the hotline 1450 for this.

  • Both PCR tests and rapid antigen tests offer the possibility of direct detection of a current COVID-19 disease. However, false negative results can - even if in rare cases - occur with both test variants, i.e. a disease with SARS-CoV-2 cannot be completely excluded. The applicable health regulations (wearing mouth and nose protection, observing distance rules, etc.) must therefore continue to be observed even in the event of a negative test result.
