Prohibited items according to legal requirements
In order to offer all passengers the greatest possible security and also to be able to rule out misunderstandings in the aircraft cabin during the flight, the European Union passed a regulation in 2015 that provides clear information on which items may not be taken into the security area, i.e. the area of an airport that requires special protection.
However, since all these items are your property, you are of course free to decide for yourself what measures are to be taken after they have been rejected at the security checkpoint. Vienna International Airport Security Services GmbH (VIAS) offers you various solutions as a service.
You can leave your items safely with us until your return, or have them sent to an address of your choice, provided they fit into an A4 envelope. If you still wish your items to travel with you, we will be happy to assist you with the subsequent check-in with your airline.
In addition to EU law, national legislation must also be observed.
Thus
- Weapons of all kinds
- Ammunition of all kinds
- War material of all kinds
- Shooting and explosive devices of all kinds
are prohibited under the Austrian Aviation Security Act. If such items are found in your hand luggage or checked baggage, the police must be informed immediately.
Please note that for security reasons, items and liquids which are not listed here or which are within the measurement limits listed here may be classified as prohibited at the time of your journey and rejected at the security checkpoint.
In these cases, Vienna International Airport Security Services GmbH offers a depot and postal service on behalf of Flughafen Wien AG, where you can choose to have your prohibited item stored at Vienna Airport for a certain period of time or sent to an address of your choice in accordance with the applicable prices. You will receive all information on the deposit and postage service directly at the checkpoint or at the Security Service Counter.

Dangerous goods are items or substances that may pose a potential risk to health, safety, property or the environment such as:
- Means of transport with built-in lithium batteries.
- Avalanche backpacks
- Dry ice
- Car Batteries
- and the like
Special regulations apply to the transport of dangerous goods, depending on the airline chosen.
Check the regulations with your airline or handling agent before departure.

Checking in baggage makes your travels easier. Explosive, flammable, corrosive or magnetic substances are not allowed in the suitcase.
Prohibited item - what to do?
You have been held up at the security checkpoint and are unintentionally carrying a prohibited item or an item that has been rejected by the security checkpoint?
Then Vienna Airport and Vienna International Airport Security Services (VIAS) offer the following options:
- assist you with a subsequent check-in (please clarify possible additional costs in this case with your airline)
- to assist you in depositing the item (depot service - depending on the type of item. Please clarify the additional costs with the security staff at the Security Service Counter)
- Assist you in sending the item by post to an address of your choice. (Postal service - depending on the item type and size (max. one A4 envelope). Please clarify the additional costs with the security staff at the Security Service Counter).
Our staff at the Security Service Counter at the security checkpoints in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 will be happy to provide you with information directly on site.
Find out about the regulations of the destination airports before departure. Other national laws may be stricter in some cases.
