Photovoltaic facilities, e-mobility and CO2-neutral business operations: Vienna Airport is pleased with award granted by Airports Council International for its climate protection successes

The international airports association ACI (Airports Council International) has been honoured for its successful climate protection measures. The resolute implementation of its climate protection strategy as well as the realisation of a photovoltaic facility covering 24 hectares on the airport grounds and thus one of the largest PV power plants at European airports, are worthy of recognition. Gatwick Airport was the winner in the category “Eco-Innovation,” whereas Vienna Airport took second place. The award was handed over to Vienna Airport at the ACI Annual General Assembly held in Barcelona on 28 June 2023.

“Climate protection and sustainability are important corporate goals of Flughafen Wien AG. Since the beginning of 2023, Vienna Airport has been operating in a CO2-neutral manner. Thanks to its photovoltaic plant spanning an area of 24 hectares, Vienna Airport not only features an Austrian flagship project but has also set international benchmarks. We are resolutely pressing ahead with our climate protection initiative. Our photovoltaic capacities are currently being doubled, enabling us to derive 50% of our required electricity needs from solar energy in the future,” state Julian Jäger and Günther Ofner, Members of the Management Board of the Vienna Airport operating company Flughafen Wien AG.

VIE doubles PV capacities – next target is net zero CO2 emissions by 2033
Vienna Airport has been consistently pursuing its climate protection strategy since 2011 and has successfully implemented numerous measures. For example, the airport operates Austria’s largest photovoltaic plant, focuses on e-mobility, geothermal energy, intelligent building management and much more. The expansion of solar power production from 24 hectares at present to about 45 hectares in the future is currently under construction. As a result, the airport site will be able to generate about 50% of its total electricity requirements itself. The next sustainability target has already been set. Vienna Airport plans to reduce the CO2 emissions from its business operations to net zero by the year 2033.
