Vienna International Airport: resurfacing work on runway 11/29
Maintenance work will be carried out on runway 11/29 at Vienna International Airport on up to ten nights during the period from 6 September to 22 October 2010. The actual scheduling will depend on the weather and wind conditions, whereby a decision will be made each day during the afternoon as to whether work can be carried out in the following night. The involved runway will be closed from 10 pm to 7 am.
During this time traffic will be directed to runway 16/34. The closing of runway 11/29 will lead to deviations from the night flight rule in the approach and departure sections of runway 16/34 that are located in the province of Lower Austria. The communities to the east and south of the airport (e.g. Kleinneusiedl, Enzersdorf, Margarethen/Moos and Schwadorf) will be affected by take-offs and landings, depending on the direction of the wind. Westerly winds will require the use of a route over the community of Großenzersdorf for take-offs, in deviation from the normal night flight rule. In order to minimise the disturbance for residents, no work will be carried out on the nights from Saturday to Monday.
In addition to resurfacing work on the runway areas, this project also includes the testing and maintenance of electro-technical equipment, cleaning of the drainage systems, work on the runway marking and the removal of rubber abrasion. This precautionary maintenance is particularly important for Vienna International Airport to avoid unplanned immediate runway closures and ensure safe flight operations.
