Vienna International Airport: 2.9% decline in passengers during October 2009
 
The decline in passenger traffic at Vienna International Airport slowed substantially during October 2009. The number of passengers handled in this month fell by 2.9% year-on-year to 1,640,677.
 
Flight movements and maximum take-off weight (MTOW) were 8.2% and 5.8% lower, respectively, during October 2009. Cargo increased 4.0% over the comparable prior year level. The number of transfer passengers declined 2.1% to 499,400.
 
Passenger traffic to Eastern Europe (scheduled and charter flights) was 12.3% lower than October 2008. Western Europe stabilised near the October 2008 level with a plus of 0.2%. Traffic to the Middle East rose by 12.8% over the comparable prior year period.
 
During the ten months from January to October 2009, the number of passengers travelling to European destinations fell by 9.5% year-on-year to 6,621,796. In contrast, traffic to the Middle East increased 6.3% during this same period. Flughafen Wien AG assumes the traffic forecasts for 2009 - which include a decline of 9% in passenger volume - will be met.
