Easter and crises in Ukraine, Russia and the Near East as causes
Passenger traffic forecast for 2014 remains intact
The number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in March 2014 fell by 2.6% year-on-year to 1,661,355. This decline is attributable, above all, to the later date for Easter in April this year (and not in March as in the previous year) as well as the tense situations in Ukraine, Russia and the Near East, and general capacity reductions by the airlines. Cargo rose by 5.0 % in march 2014.
However, traffic forecasts for the full 12 months of 2014 remain intact with an increase of 1 to 3% in the number of passengers.
Flight movements declined by 2.1%, while maximum take-off weight rose by 0.2%. A comparison of March 2014 and March 2013 shows a 6.4% drop in the number of transfer passengers and 1.0% in the number of local passengers
Passenger traffic to Western Europe declined 0.7% in March 2014, while Eastern Europe recorded a minus of 6.3%. The number of passengers travelling to the Middle East and the Far East was 9.4% and 6.2% lower, repectively. In contrast, passenger traffic to North America rose by a strong 14.4% in comparison with March 2013.
